Telangana shines at National Sailing Championships, eyes international glory

Telangana’s young sailors dominated the sub-junior category at the National Sailing Championships in Mumbai, claiming five coveted spots in the top 11, including three medals. The Yacht Club of Hyderabad’s contingent put on a stellar performance, leaving their mark on the prestigious event.

Deekshita Komaravelly, a rising star from Rasoolpura, Hyderabad, secured the overall bronze medal and the coveted gold in the girls’ category. This impressive double win solidifies her place in the National Squad, which will represent India at international competitions. With two medals under her belt, Deekshita is poised for even greater achievements in the future.

Banny Bongur, another talented sailor from Rasoolpura, narrowly missed the gold by a hair’s breadth, but his exceptional performance still earned him a well-deserved spot in the National Squad. Both Deekshita and Banny are students at Udbhav School and train under the guidance of The YCH Sports Foundation at Husain Sagar.

The team’s success wasn’t limited to the top three. Govardhan Pallara, Lahiri Komaravelly, and Rizwan Mohammad finished in 8th, 9th, and 11th positions respectively, showcasing the depth of talent within the Telangana contingent.

With their sights set even higher, the team is now gearing up for the upcoming National Championships in Shillong in March. Coach Suheim Sheikh expressed confidence in his team’s ability to make history in the Northeast, stating, “We expect this year to be a huge success for our teams and hopefully a crack at some internationals very soon.”

Telangana’s young sailors have made a resounding statement at the National Championships, proving their talent and dedication. Their journey is just beginning, and with continued hard work and support, they are poised to reach even greater heights on the international stage.
